August’s Belated Photo Review…

Young grunge scamps Old Forest got proceedings over to the noisiest possible start at The Good Ship on August 19th. Though they may be raw they have two or three potentially awesome tunes, keep your ears out for these pups – you’ll certainly be able to hear them coming!

Old Forest

Next up the bewilderingly wonderful IDRchitecture. Performing with a reduced entourage of guitar, keys & percussion and awash with charming harmonies & whimsical stories, they’re white-boy science rap folk won fans of all musical genres. The intricate melodies, rhythms & unusual topics were akin to Everything Everything & a similar vein of success could be waiting for the Reading band, especially as they’r set to feature on Huw Stephen’s new compilation.

IDRchitecture

Love At Death Beach brought the night to an assured and raucous finale with post unk of the highest order – and the biggest bass amp ever seen. The Leeds boys will be touring all over the country in the coming months so make sure you check’em out!

Love At Death Beach

Old Forest Added to Monster Truck VI

After weeks of searching we can finally reveal that getting Monster Truck VI off to a high octane start will be Old Forest, the raw & scuzzy slacker grunge 3peice from London.

Any mention of grunge instantly brings to mind Nirvana or the influential Subpop record label but the track Moe, recorded by Joe from Monster Truck I headliners Artefacts for Space Travel & Dignan Porch, contains traces of ‘Dandy Warhols’ too.

Whats more Old Forest’s squelling guitars & desperate vocals also hints at My Bloody Valentine & New Yorker noise rockers A Place to Bury Strangers.

listen on myspace

Old Forest will be joined by the charming IDRchitecture & tighter than tighter Love at Death Beach at the The Good Ship (Kilburn) Thursday 19th August. Tickets £5 from the link on the right hand side of the page.

Love at Death Beach & IDRchitecture 19-Aug @The Good Ship

Monster Truck returns to the Good Ship on Thursday 19th August with more rad new new music to get too excited about, check it…

Eerie post punk underground supergroup Love at Death Beach rose from the graves of dark electronic rock Londoners The Slow Blade, spikey Oxford alt. Indie boys Youthmovies & shouty iForward Russia!-esque Sheffield punksta Fury of the Headteachers.

The band have barely been together a few months but have already played the crazy Tramlines festival in the streets of Sheffield and their grinding doomed bass, noisey Stained Glass Heroes guitar and murky Horrors/O Children vocals continues where Ikara Colt left off. Dark and tragic, Love at Death Beach lurk in the same shadows as Joy Division & Interpol.

Surreal Reading (up to) 8 piece IDRchitecture create ridiculous & sincere Bowie/Beck-esque charming pop about Stegosauruses & shopping at Tesco. Through their dreamy, brilliantly whimsical songs, IDR celebrate the absurdity of modern life & in doing so have caught the attention of Radio1’s Huw Stephens & are set to star in his upcoming ‘Music Sounds Better With Huw Vol 2’ CD. Vol 1 by the way featured Dinosaur Pile-Up, Pulled Apart by Horses, We Have Band AND Monster Truck’s very own Gallops. Bodes well then, especially as jolly new single ‘Mortimer’ is out now.

FYI IDRchitecture will be playing a scaled down show due to the loss of a guitarist.

PLUS another act to be announced, keep ‘em peeled…

Sucioperro – an external, unbiased review…

Rather than the usual hyperboled Monster Truck review, we’re going to use extracts from an external source this time around. Ben (think the guy’s name is Ben) has written a pretty decent review so read on below…

Sourced from http://benfyffereviews.blogspot.com

“Sucioperro are a band that should be playing at least 500+ venues by now. In fact, that they are not is a travesty showing the true lack of interest most of the public has in the British music scene and seems to prove, sadly, that major label marketing is the only way to really get anywhere if you are an upcoming British act. For those who haven’t heard them, Sucioperro are easily comparable (perhaps somewhat unfairly) to their mates Biffy Clyro (who have, with major label backing, abseiled to the arena level). Led by JP ‘Dragon’ Reid, Sucio deftly combine complex time signatures with sing along choruses all sung in Reid’s noticeably Scottish accent. Somewhat heavier than Biffy, often verging into metal territory, and featuring guitar work that is undeniably impressive, Sucio are first and foremost a band that writes songs…and damn good ones. With Fergus ‘Goose’ Munro and Stewart ‘Spider’ Chown providing the sort of ballast that someone should’ve thought of equipping the Titanic with, Sucio are a dense sounding band that write anthems that should be filtering their way into the nation’s living rooms. Instead they have to make do with the cosy confines of Kilburn’s The Good Ship. A venue that holds around 225 people [ED. 250], at a push I’d imagine – that is if the punters actually want to be able to see the band and not just drink a pint at the bar, this is what truly counts as ‘intimate’ territory.

The first band backing Sucioperro up tonight are Buick McKane. A Northampton based 3/4 piece (I could only see 3 of them [ED. HA there are only 2! What a brilliant racket they both make though] but then I was half watching the France v Mexico game and couldn’t see the whole stage), they are similar in sound to the likes of The Xcerts with wholesome anthems that also pack a firm punch. A promising band for sure.

Buick McKane

Kill Goliath impress. The musical dynamics are interesting, and the vocals endearing, particulary the final three songs.  [ED. next for the band a tour to Ireland which will be crazy!]

Kill Goliath

I Am Austin meanwhile are absolutely awe inspiring. Partly because drummer David Mitchell (dressed in a colourful vest, swimming shorts and a hat) batters the fuck out of his kit like a man possessed and partly because they are, thanks to Adam Hughes’ beguiling bass parts, undeniably funky. Yet I mean funky in a way that sounds like the world ending in a massive swell of screaming and feedback. To describe than as a mere ‘drum n bass’ duo would be sacrelige, they are so much more. Go and see them if you get a chance.

I Am Austin

As you may have gathered from my praise of them in the first paragraph, i also think that you should also go and see Sucioperro. This is the first chance I’ve had to see them live (it’s their fault, 4 years of choosing bad dates for London gigs) and it’s well worth the wait. Sucio are three blokes who clearly love playing their music, Dragon with an especially wide grin throughout their hour long set. They are extremely tight live, and they are a visual act too, watching them is entertaining despite them having nothing in the way of projections to back up their performance [ED. this was due to disappointing technical difficulties]. Having opened up with the classic ‘Grace And Out Of Me’ and run through a set including “possibly the final ever peformances” of ‘Random Acts Of Intimacy’ and ‘Found You Makin’ the band don’t hold anything back even as their set draws to a close. Indeed, if anything, they work themselves into even more of a sweat as they close with a rousing rendition of ‘The Final Confessions Of Mabel Stark’. This all comes via the loveliness of ‘The Lonesome Tree’ and some kind Jager sharing from Dragon during ‘I Have Reached My Life’. At the conclusion of the gig the signs of a great live act are all there (especially fans who have sung along to every word and are now hoarse and sweaty). As they come off the stage, still resplendent in their matching black Pain Agency uniforms, they look like they’ve had a great time and (even if they are putting this on and secretly hate rock music) everyone in the crowd certainly has.”

Sucioperro

Sucio's adoring fans at Monster Truck, The Good Ship 17th June

Truly a special night, a trend we hope to continue with our Monster Truck shows in August & October…

For the Undecided…

We’re fast approaching Thursday nights rock super show. If you haven’t already please follow this link to purchase your e-ticket for a mear £6 http://tinyurl.com/monster-sucio

For the undecided out there I urge you to reconsider your plans. The World Cup is lame at the mo so why watch another draw when you can see four rock behemoths. Sucioperro have announced they will be playing new material from their forthcoming album as well as all the classics. I Am Austin are riding the crest of a wave after CH4 Evo rooms & BBC R1 Big Wknd appearances. Buick Mckane have continued spreading there rock goodness with notable support slots with XCERTS and last but by no means least Kill Goliath have continued their assault on the music industry with relentless touring resulting in a live sound that exceeds there short existence. This will be one of the best nights of progressive, new wave, alternative rock you’ll see this year in London.

Don’t miss out

Monster Love…

Buick McKane & Kill Goliath – Rock Behemoths in Waiting

Buick McKane, the two piece rock behemoth and their ear pounding alternative new wave sound return to The Good Ship after a jubilant set at February’s Monster Truck. Buick have the incredible nak of fusing heavy riffs, great live effects with pinpoint timing to create a sound that shouldn’t be possible for two mere mortals. Previous support slots with And So I Watch You From Afar, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, Tubelord and Cage The Elephant prove Buicks pedigree. Expect a tight set and even tighter jeans! RAWK!

Stepping up for the unfortunately absent IDRchitecture, B McK’s sets are always great great fun & full of anthemic hooks, they are not to be missed; here’s what we said after there previous impressive Monster show in Feb…

Fueled on a tasty Nando’s chicken feast, our headliners Buick McKane destroyed the Good Ship - how do two people make so much awesome noise?! After braving the Northampton blizzards en route to Capital City the power punk duo were on spectacular form, ripping through their hook-laden set like the Foos, The Hives or Manics. Sean Grant is a proper front man, demanding your attention with his guitarmanship, swagger & wit, whilst Meg White alike drummer Mark Nicholas just consistently bangs out the hypnotic beats. With their record label deal coming to an end this spring, expect a host of A&R hounds on their tails after this outstanding performance of mighty rockness.”

Should be good then eh? Run over to http://www.myspace.com/buickmckane for a sneaky peek of whats to come.

And kicking things off before the aforementioned Buick McKane & I Am Austin, Oh and Sucioperro of course: Kill Goliath.

Terrorising the Music Industry with their DIY ideals & savage tunes, Kill Goliath’s inspiring progressive post alt/rock will no doubt get Thursday 17th off to a riotous start! With wondering guitars and thought provoking lyrics, KG can easily be compared to bands such as Brand New et al. Although still in their infancy in this form, Kill Goliath have proved a force to be reckoned with , commanding the audiences attention but rewarding them with something beautiful and revolutionary, watch out Goliath (aka the slimy record industry) as these Irish boys are here to Kill you with a powerful rock of their own.

I Am Austin – the Dynamic Duo

The ghost of Toronto dance metallers Death From Above 1979 lives on in I Am Austin, the mighty drum & bass electro rawk two-some from North Wales. The diminutive dynamic duo celebrate all that’s great about rock 2 pieces; the fun of Monster Truck heroes Buick McKane (who have joined this awesome bill by the way!), the groove & ambition of That Fucking Tank & the power of the infamous Lighting Bolt, creating fast & frantic riotous dancefloor punk.

The teeny Austins made their TV debut in the Spring appearing on Channel 4′s Evo Music Rooms showcase show & played the BBC Introducing Stage at Radio 1′s Big Weekend in Bangor late May, the same arena which former Monster headliners Gallops conquered in Swindon in 2009. Oh and whats more they were only the Myspace Features Artist of the day yesterday- Imagine that?! Previously they have started avalanches at Austria’s awesome Snowbombing fest & supported luminaries such as The Black Lips, NME best new band Bombay Bicycle Club & the legendary Graham Coxon.

(see ‘em play at the Radio 1 Big Weekend here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/bigweekend/2010/artists/iamaustin/#p0081g50)

Last winter’s ‘Sounds Like Leather’ EP featuring the down & dirrty ‘Stripper’ & the B-movie joy of ‘Zombie Town’ highlights their multi- pedal distorted & extorted bass and smash & crash drumming.

Monster Truck guarantee I Am Austin will get everyone stomping before Sucioperro bring the loudest, most powerful rock The Good Ship has ever seen. Gonna be quite a night on the 17th then eh? Better buy some tickets hadn’t you… (http://tinyurl.com/monster-sucio)

Sucioperro at The Good Ship June 17th

Trucking hell, Sucioperro are headlining Monster Truck! How completely freakin’ amazing.

And as per usual, we’v compiled an awesome line up to provide apt support; I Am Austin, Kill Goliath & IDRchitecture. To what ever you can to get to The Good Ship on June 17th to see this, tickets are selling so click on the link on the right handside of the page to make sure you actually get in you hear!

Sucioperro meaning ‘Dirty Dogs’ in Spanish are Scottish alt/post rock royalty. Post hardcore surrounded by inventive instrumental brilliance, proof that heavy rock has a heart….albeit a slightly twisted, blackened one.

JP Reid fronts the 3 piece rock behemoth splitting time between chart assaulting side project ‘Marmaduke Duke’. Recent album ‘Pain Agency’ mixed by Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro) spawned singles “Don’t Change (What You Cannot Change)” & “The Dissident Code”, they have a nationwide following of steadfast fanatics, top drawer musicianship and even better songs, Sucioperro are the real deal – an astounding band at the very top of their game. Truly one of those acts that you wonder “why aren’t these guys massive!?”

Big thanks to our good friend Mike of Fairplay gigs for snagging these rock kings.
